The Lillian Trilogy

When Lillian's ailing godmother gives her a mysterious book titled "How to See", she discovers that her mother might not be dead after all. Defying the orders of her over-protective father, she runs away from home to rescue her mom. But she doesn't realize that she too, is in mortal danger!

The first book in the series introduces us to a teenage girl, named Lillian LaPine and the amazing adventures she has on a quest to find her mother, who has been presumed dead for seven years. The novel is an homage to the children’s classic, “The Silver Chair” by C. S. Lewis.

Lillian’s mother is being held prisoner in an underground city, named Ra Shingal, where a mind-control drug has blocked all memory of her previous life. Once a month she must be free from the drug, so she is separated from her young son and forcibly strapped to her bed for the duration of her short period of lucidity. Lillian, her father and a boy named Jason, whose father is also being held captive, must travel to Ra Shingal to find and rescue their loved ones.

The man who captured Lillian’s mother for his bride is the leader of an obscure cult that has secreted itself in Ra Shingal. His name, Father Chimjoan, is inspired by the infamous religious leader, Jim Jones and, like the real-life reverend, Father Chimjoan poisons his own people. It is he who Lillian and Jason must face in order to rescue their parents.

But Lillian soon learns that she must face another, perhaps deadlier, foe first. It is a demon from her own psyche, and it knows and exploits all of her weaknesses!

Behind all of this is a mysterious book titled “How to See”, which details the methods and mores of enhanced vision. Lillian keeps this book as a constant companion, and learns some surprising skills in a perilous spiritual quest that parallels her dangerous physical undertaking. Also playing an important role is an ancient parchment bearing symbolic artwork which serves as a portal to the psychic plane. It is so dangerous, it can kill the unwary investigator who merely looks deeply enough at the odd icons.

Strongly thematic and character oriented, “Lillian Learns to See” encourages the reader to view the world from a broader perspective, seeking out the truth despite the dangers that may be involved. Why? For love, of course.

Lillian Learns to See

Twenty miles beneath the abandoned city of Ra Shingal, amid a race of disfigured and docile humans who live by eating poisonous mushrooms, Lillian's boyfriend hopes to find his father. But Lillian has lost her powers of enhanced vision and now must face a flesh-eating foe in the darkness.

The celebrations are over but Jason, Lillian's new boyfriend, still hasn't heard a word from the man who was sent to rescue his father. His prayers of finding the money to go back to Ra Shingal are answered, however, by Lillian's rich and beautiful best friend, Ellie, who offers to finance a trip for the three of them.

But trouble is in their path before they even leave California. Jason is visibly smitten by Ellie and he doesn't have the good sense to hide this fact. Naturally, this upsets Lillian who grows increasingly bitter as she silently watches her boyfriend fawn all over Ellie. Not only does Lillian feel that she is outmatched by her gorgeous friend, but the only advantage she had, her power of enhanced vision, seems to have completely disappeared.

So, under these less than ideal circumstances, Lillian, Ellie and Jason return to Ra Shingal in hopes of finding Jason's father in the maze of dark tunnels that lies under the now abandoned underground city. And, to Lillian's embarrassment, instead of her, it is Jason who sees the evidence that leads them down the correct tunnel.

Dark, steep and dangerous, the tunnel takes them an amazing twenty miles below the surface before they discover Henley Hornbrook, the man hired to rescue Jason's father. Found lying in a cave which is dimly lit by phosphorescent mushrooms, he is looking quite malnourished and in bad shape with a broken leg.

While nursing him back to health, he tells them about the strangely mutated people who live down there which he calls the Puffies. And when Henley tells them of the Puffie that was found mutilated and half-eaten, Lillian remembers her inner-demon and how she had set it against Father Chimjoan, the deposed leader of Ra Shingal who had vanished into the same tunnels!

Lillian soon realizes she has to reconnect with her demon to regain the use of enhanced vision, and in order to do that, she must face Father Chimjoan once again. But this time she has to find him in the darkness and he, having being driven insane by the demon's psychic invasion, has been turned into some kind of flesh eating monster.

Beneath the Silent City

Lillian's nemesis moves into her neighborhood as the new pastor of the local church claiming he has renounced his evil ways. But when a popular boy kills himself in front of the whole school and local kids start dying, everyone blames Lillian! Can she convince anyone she didn't do it?

Lillian's recent battle with Father Chimjoan and her resulting reputation as a freak at school were enough to have caused her to swear off adventures forever! Declaring that she just wanted to grow up normal, she gave her precious books back to her godmother, Kelly.

Barely a year passes, however, before Lillian hears news of a new pastor who has moved in and renovated the old abandoned church down the street. To her horror, she finds that the new pastor is Father Chimjoan! He is just sweet as sugar and explains that his soul was saved by the sisters at the hospital and he decided to use his remaining money to become the pastor of a church. And, no, he didn't know Lillian lived nearby.

But when local teens start dying mysteriously with what Lillian recognizes as symptoms of an incredibly strong psychic invasion, the town erupts into a frenzied witch hunt.  And with a bad word from the new pastor coupled with her already questionable reputation, the hunt turns to Lillian.

She is brought before an inquiry panel and made to endure several scathing testimonials from schoolmates  who hate her. Ultimately, the town council decrees she must be sedated and held in a mental hospital for observation and evaluation.

After only one night at the hospital, Lillian realizes that she must get away because the Thorazine renders her helpless against psychic attack, and she knows she's a target. But she is held down by strong straps and the high security hospital offers little hope of escape.

Yet before the second night begins, Lillian is rescued by Kelly, who has publicly confessed to the psychic invasions, claiming to have done it for revenge against the kids who were bullying her goddaughter. But when they cross paths in the hospital Kelly says, "You saved my life, now it's my turn to save yours."

It's now clear that Lillian must expose Father Chimjoan as the real perpetrator. But he has become the most popular pastor in the town.
